Objectives
1. Acquire a critical knowledge of the Greco-Latin heritage in Europe, acquiring the necessary competences to analyze the works and central ideas of the classic legacy and its influence in the current culture. 2. Recognize the ways in which classical ideas and values ¿¿determine central aspects of the contemporary world. 3. To know the process of transmission of the classic legacy, modifications and manipulations throughout History.
Description of contents: programme
1. Greco-Roman civilization in the genesis of Europe. 2. Orient and classic legacy in Spain 3. The classic legacy: Spanish historiographic currents. 4. Classical Archeology: genesis and cultural influence. The Spanish case. 5. The classical aesthetics and its reception: Winckelmann and Theory of the Arts. The Recoveries of the classic ideal in Spain. 6. The survival of the pagan religions in the Christian religion. The Transmission of myths. 7. Antiquity in Western politics. Use and abuse of classic models in Spain. SECOND PART: 1. Classical philology: tasks and methods. 2. Material sources of classical philology in Spain: libraries and collections of manuscript texts. 3. The epic poetry of the Greco-Roman world and its Hispanic reception until the twentieth century. 4. The Greek tragedy and its reception: from Sophocles to Maria Zambrano. 5. Greek political philosophy: Plato and his legacy in the Hispanic culture. 6. Greek political philosophy: Aristotle and his legacy in the Hispanic culture. 7. The Spanish humanists and the rediscovery of the classics throughout the European Renaissance.
Learning activities and methodology
1. Lectures, which will present the knowledge that students should acquire. Students will be given basic reference texts that allow them to understand and deepen the contents of the subject taught. 2. Practical classes, in which we will work with specific documentation that allows students a more precise approach to the contents of the subject. 3. Cultural excursions. 4. Oral presentations, presenting the results and materials worked, with the aim of promoting learning and the acquisition of skills in the field of presentation and public dissemination of the work done.
