Description of contents: programme
1. Atoms. Atomic theory. Structure of matter. Isotopes and radioactivity. Electronic configurations. Periodic table. Main components of living things. 2. Molecules: types of bonds. Organic molecules and their nomenclature. Properties associated with structure. 3. Laws of thermodynamics: Work and heat. Principles of thermodynamics. 4. Equilibria and chemical kinetics: acid-base equilibria, oxidation-reduction, precipitation, complexation. Functional groups. Reactivity of organic compounds. 5. Conformation and Stereochemistry (chirality, enantiomers). 6. Structural characterisation of organic compounds.
Learning activities and methodology
Classroom lectures. Face-to-face classes: reduced (workshops, seminars, case studies). Student individual work. Laboratory session. Final exam. Seminars and lectures supported by computer and audiovisual aids. Practical learning based on cases and problems, and exercise resolution. Individual and group or cooperative work with the option of oral or written presentation. Individual and group tutorials to resolve doubts and queries about the subject. Internships and directed laboratory activities.
