Description of contents: programme

This course has a triple objective: firstly, the student must know the anthropological tradition with particular reference to the concept of culture, including the main dimensions of the anthropological approach to the study of a society from a cultural perspective. Secondly, the student will know the main topics of the subdiscipline of cultural anthropology. Finally, and most relevant, the student will become familiar with ethnographic methods, as instruments extended from anthropology to cultural studies: 1. The problem of an anthropological definition of culture. 2. Main anthropological components of culture: conventions of social order, rituals, and myths 3. Great schools of the contemporary anthropology 4. Relationship between ethnomethodology and cultural studies 5. The anthropological analysis of micro-rituals as a cultural analysis of daily life 6. Introduction to case studies as a method for cultural studies

Learning activities and methodology

METHODOLOGY 1. Main class: the teacher will present and contextualise some of the problems that will be addressed during the week. The students will have some basic Reading to help them focus on the subject matter. 2. Seminar: a student will present the material that was previously provided by the teacher (available in ¿aula global¿) and will lead the group discussion revolving around the text and the issues considered by the author. All the students will have to read the text before hand and take part in the discussion in class as a basic requirement of their evaluation.

Assessment System

EVALUATION 

The final exam that will account for 60% of the overall mark and will evaluate global understanding and knowledge of the topics covered and skills that have been acquired though the course. 

Permanent assessment will account for 40% of the overall mark will evaluate participation in class discussions, oral presentations of the texts suggested and a midterm essay that the students will have to write choosing one of the topics suggested by the course teacher.
