Description of contents: programme
This subject is conceived as an introduction to the cultural diversity of the World, through the analysis of some of its major regions. The first part of the course deals with the concept of cultural region, its typology and defining factors, as well as the main World¿s cultural regionalization systems and proposals. In this regard, cultural regions are defined as spatial units whose population share similar cultural characteristics, including elements such as history, landscape (considered as a result of society-nature relationship), language, religion, food, political systems, etc. The second part of the course aims to analyse some of the main world cultural regions identified by academic geography, namely: Europe, North America, Latin America, the Arab world, Sub-Saharan Africa and Monsoon Asia. 1. World cultural regions: concept and classification. -The concept of cultural region and its typology. -Defining factors and processes of formation and change of cultural regions. -Cultural regionalizations of the world: main systems and proposals. 2. Introduction to selected World cultural regions. -Europe. -North America. -Latin America. -The Arab world (North Africa and the Middle East). - Sub-Saharan Africa. - Monsoon Asia (South Asia, Southeast Asia and East Asia).
