1. Introduction. The Middle Ages: What, when, where? The way of seeing the Middle Ages from different times in History. Sources to study the Middle Ages. SECTION 1. FIRST STEPS OF EUROPE DEFINITION: FROM THE ¿FALL¿ OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE TO THE YEAR 1000 2. West and East after the ¿fall¿ of the Roman Empire. The first German Kingdoms in the West. The Eastern Roman Empire during the V and VI centu- ries. 3. The beginnings of two religions in the Mediterranean world: Christianity and Islam 4. Western Empire and Eastern Empire. The carolingians and the byzantine empire. 5. Reshaping the space. Moving East: the center of power from France to Germany. Other parts of the European space (Slavs, Bulgarians, Hungarians, Scandinavians) SECTION 2. EUROPE BETWEEN THE XI AND THE XIII CENTURIES: THE FEUDAL WORLD (ECONOMY, SOCIETY, POLITICS) 6. Feudalism. Concept. Ways of understanding feudalism. The genesis of feudalism. 7. Feudal society and economy. 8. Political forms of feudalism: Kingdoms of France, England, Iberia, the Holy Roman Empire and the Italian space. The Church and its influence. SECTION 3. A TIME OF CULTURAL SPLENDOR AND EMERGENCE OF NEW INSTITUTIONS: XI AND XIII CENTURIES 9. The power of the Church: maintenance of social and religious order. Heresies and Inquisition. A common objective: crusades. 10. Urban rebirth: Causes and consequences of technological advances until the eleventh century. Theories on the causes of urban rebirth. Changes in the rural economy at the base of the rebirth of cities. The municipal government institutions. 11. The transmission of knowledge: from monastic schools to cathedral schools. The birth of the universities. SECTION 4. NEW CHALLENGES AT THE END OF THE MIDDLE AGES 12. The Black Death, origin: the situation of Asia in the preceding centuries. The end of the Abbasid caliphate and the Mongol empire. 13. The Black Death: problems within the context of late medieval crisis. Demographic, economic, social and religious consequences. 14. The Hundred Years War: An Anglo-French conflict involving other European kingdoms. A war that illuminates the landscape of other aspects of life in Europe in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. 15. The cultural legacy of the Middle Ages in the contemporary world: novel, cinema, opera, theater, fine arts (painting, sculpture), medieval markets.
