The Workshop on mapping and graphical representations is one of three courses that make up Subject 2: Methods and techniques of geopolitical and strategic analysis. Conceived as a workshop, the course is essentially a practical course focused on training the students in the critical reading, comprehension and, especially, the production of cartographies and other graphical representations in the field of geopolitics and strategic studies. The workshop is essentially oriented to the integrative learning of different computer programs (Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, QGIS and Microsoft Excel and ArcGIS online or Carto) with the aim of providing the necessary set of tools and knowledge that will make the students able to significantly improve their communication skills. After the course, the students will be able to produce attractive and meaningful cartographies and other graphical representations in an autonomous way. This skill will allow the students to enrich the geopolitical and strategic reports that they will have to produce in the third and final course of Subject 2, the Workshop on geopolitical and strategic reports. In addition to the aforementioned specific competences and learning results, this workshop aims to strengthen the following general competences and skills: Ability to understand the main factors involved in geopolitical and strategic analysis. -Ability to understand and analyze from a critical perspective the territorial dimension of the discourses and practices that guide international politics, as well as to contribute to the public debate about them and to deepen the values of democracy, dialogue, tolerance, social and environmental justice and peace. -Ability to understand and analyze national and international conflicts that have a territorial origin or influence and propose political strategies and instruments that can contribute to their resolution. -Ability to understand and analyze national and international conflicts that have a territorial origin or influence and propose political strategies and instruments that can contribute to its resolution. -Ability to demonstrate critical thinking in the analytical arguments of their own and of others. -Ability to plan and carry out an autonomous research in the field of geopolitics and strategic studies. -Ability to communicate and present, in a clear, precise and rigorous manner, geopolitical and strategic reports to both specialized and non-specialized audiences.

The workshop¿s programme includes the following lessons or didactic units: 1. Introduction to geopolitical maps and graphical representations. 2. Introduction to Geographic Information Systems. 3. Workshop on Geographic Information Systems 4. Introduction to Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. 5. Workshop on Adobe Illustrator. 6. Creating a Digital Atlas: introduction to online maps.

The learning activities will consist of 7 theoretical and practical classes that will take place once a week during the First Term, with a 3-hour duration each. These classes will be complemented with 2-hour of personal tutoring a week during the course. During the classes, the students will learn how to use the different computer programs and will practice in the production of cartographies and other graphical representations. Finally, the students will carry out an individual term work. The methodology followed in the classes will be based on: - Class presentations with computer and audiovisual media support, in which the main concepts of the course are developed. Course bibliography is provided to complement the students' learning. - Critical reading of texts recommended by the teacher of the course, either for further discussion in class, or to expand and consolidate the knowledge of the subject. - Resolution of practical cases, problems, etc. ... raised by the teacher individually or in groups. - Presentations and discussions in class, under the teacher's moderation of topics related to the content of the subject, and practical case¿s exposition and discussion. - Preparation of papers and reports individually or in groups. The tutorials will normally take place via online and/or via e-mail. ----TEACHING SYSTEM FOR 2020-21 UNDER NORMAL CONDITIONS--- In accordance with the teaching model approved for 2020-21, under normal conditions the Master in Geopolitics and Strategic Studies will be taught On Campus (Face-to-Face classes). In order to ensure the prevention and social distancing measures in classrooms. the courses with a number of students enrolled higher than the capacity of the classroom will have a Weekly Rotating System for the face-to face classes combined with synchronous online teaching system. All students must have the necessary equipment to follow classes remotely (device with internet connection). Due to the restrictions in the use of computer rooms on Campus it may be necessary to take your own computer equipment for its use in the classroom. * Students that cannot attend to On Campus classes at the beginning of the academic year, due to difficulties or delays obtaining their visas, border closures, or similar issues, will be able to follow classes in a Synchronous Online Teaching system until they are able to arrive to On Campus classes.
