Political Theories and Ideologies I
Understanding the influence of ideologies on current political and social movements. Recognizing and distinguishing the main Western ideologies and its different roots, both political and historical Acquiring through the knowledge of the main concepts, currents of thought and discussions on political theory, the necesary theoretical tools to analyze political phenomena today. Learning how to relate political ideologies and policies in response to problems of modern societies such as multiculturalism and inmgration or nationalism and the crisis of the nation-state model, for instance. Developing both reason and argument skills.

UNIT I: REPUBLICANISM Origins and Development Republicanism and neorepublicanism Central themes Republicanism and democracy Special Attention will be paid to the following Thinkers: P. Pettit, Q. Skinner, B. Barber. UNIT II: COMMUNITARIANISM Origins and Development Central themes Common Good Liberalism, Communitarianism and Politics of Identity Special Attention will be paid to the following Thinkers: M. Sandel, M. Walzer, Ch. Taylor, A. Etzioni UNIT III: MULTICULTURALISM Origins and Development Central themes Diversity, Identity Federalism, Nationalism Special Attention will be paid to the following Thinkers: W. Kymlicka, B. Parekh, A. Gagnon. UNIT IV: FEMINISM Origins and Development Central themes Liberal Feminism. Socialist Feminism. Radical Feminism Special Attention will be paid to the following Thinkers: M. Wollstonecraft, F. Tristán, A. Phillips, Ch. Mouffe. UNIT V: ECOLOGISM Origins and Development Central Themes Ecopacifism Ecosocialism Special Attention will be paid to the following Thinkers: Lovelock, A. Dobson, M. Löwy.
Learning activities and methodology
¿The course includes both plenary lectures and practical sessions ¿A main aim of the course is to get students involved in the learning process, offering the basic tools in order to reasoning and debating the topics and readings of the subject program ¿Students will be encouraged to compare the different ideologies and authors presented throughout the plenary lectures. ¿Researching skills will be developed through the depth study of one particular ideology. By the end of the course, stutents must be capable of: a) Finding its roots b) Indentifying its main authors and point out in what ideas they agree/differ c) Giving examples of its presence in concrete political phenomena ¿Once the research is finished, studets must defense firmly their choose, and prove that they know the main differences whith the rest of the ideologies included in the program
