Objectives
By the end of the course the following competences will be developed: - The student will be able to set up relations between written texts and forms of power of a specific society. - The student will be able to analyze how community's cultural imaginaries are formed as identity structures in cultural production. - The student will be know the geopolitical models of domination and its cultural and artistic expressions. - The student will have access to conceptual and methodological tools that will allow him to establish relations between texts and forms of power. - The student will have acquired conceptual and methodological tools required to study the historical dimension of power and written texts. -The student will be able to analyse and judge current discussions of the relations betwen power and production, dissemination and text reading texts.
Skills and learning outcomes
Description of contents: programme
The approach to literary texts including the linguistic perpective that Russian formalism, New criticism, Idealism and Rhetoric provide to find out the linguistic sources of this texts is the first step for understanding its operating mode although other aspects related to sociological organization of literary production are required for a full comprehension. Therefore, certain instruments of sociological, historical but also discoursive analysis should be used. All literary and non literary discourses are determined by social agents that canalise its production, image as well as its distribution. In this context, the power should be understood as the power of certain social groups, not necessarily political or related to politics that are responsable of literary and non literary discourses according to their interests. The following contents will be studied in this course: 1. Discourse and cultural imaginery. 2.- The space of cultural domination. 3.- Ideology, knowledge and cultural imaginaries. 4.- Cultural imaginary and domination. The list of readings will be provided at the begining of the course
Learning activities and methodology
1) The student will attend either the professor's presentation of the contents or the presentation of other colleagues under his supervision. 2) The student will learn how to use basic and complementary bibliography regarding forms of power. 3) The student will read and work with selected texts related to forms of power and he will have to coment on them. 4) In order to apply theory, the student will be expected to do specific exercises. 5) The student will have to produce a work in group in which he/ the group will prove his research competence in forms of power and discourse. TUTORIALS: The professor are avaliable for helping students during office hours (tutorials)
