Overview of the Classical Graeco-Roman culture through the literary texts. Learning and practice of a Classical language. Introduction to the classical world and the disciplines related to its study, with particular emphasis on philological disciplines.
Description of contents: programme
Introduction to Classical Studies and to Classical languages. Morphology and syntax. Vocabulary. Translation of basic texts. Knowledge of historical and cultural context using the texts from the literary tradition. Greek literature and Latin literature through their texts. SYLLABUS: The syllabus consists of two sections: 1st section. GRAMMAR (LECTIONES and Grammatical contents, both online and during the sessions, see the detailed contents in the schedule). 2nd section. LITERATURE (Lectures on Classical culture). Such contents will be explained, proportionally distributed (grammar and literature, theory and practice, translation practices), in 28 class sessions. PRESENTATION OF THE SUBJECT 1. GRAMMAR: LECTIO I Classical languages: Latin and Greek. Basics of Latin language. LITERATURE: THEME I Classical Literature. General presentation and periods: Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic, Roman. Homeric Epics (I) 2. GRAMMAR: LECTIO II LITERATURE: THEME II Homeric Epics (II) 3. GRAMMAR: LECTIO III LITERATURE: THEME III Hesiod's didactic poetry 4. GRAMMAR: LECTIO IV LITERATURE: THEME IV Greek historiography (I): Herodotus 5. GRAMMAR: LECTIO V LITERATURE: THEME V Greek historiography (II): Thucydides 6. GRAMMAR: LECTIO VI LITERATURE: THEME VI Classical tragedy (I). Aeschylus 7. GRAMMAR: LECTIO VII LITERATURE: THEME VII Classical tragedy (II). Sophocles, Euripides 8. Learning activities and methodology
Language classes. Theory and practice (2 ECTS). Lectures on Classical Culture (2 ECTS). Practices and personal work (2 ECTS). The student's personal work with the materials ¿both of grammar and literature¿ to be placed at their disposal is basic for his / her success. The exercises and practices must be fulfilled according to the attached schedule. The student must prepare himself / herself in advance for each class through the previous reading and personal work on the materials distributed online.
