The student must acquire a basic knowledge regarding the artistic activities associated to the cultural heritage. In order to do so, at the end of the course the student is expected to be able to: - Understand the importance for a given social group of its cultural heritage - Analyze the problems affecting cultural heritage - Assess which goods can be protected through a declaration of cultural heritage - Know the main cultural and time frameworks concerning the History of Art - Learn the historic and current trends on the conservation, restoration and management of cultural heritage - Locate the information necessary to correctly fulfill his or her duties, as well as interpret it in order to elaborate contents and well-formed opinions. - Communicate and argue with academic rigor on the contents of the course, both in oral and written form. - Work with neatness, efficiency and in depth, both on his or her own and in groups.

1. Cultural Heritage: old and new threats. 2. The relationship between Art History and Cultural Heritage. 3. Travellers and travel literature. 4. The appreciation of the past: from private collections to public museums. 5. Museums and collections from the 19th to the 21st centuries. 6. Museums and collections in Spain. 7. Cultural goods: terminology, typology and categories. 8. Preserving the past: the international protection of heritage. 9. The protection of cultural heritage in Spain. 10. Conservation and restauration of monuments. 11. Criteria for the restauration of monuments in Spain. 12. Cultural heritage and mass tourism: between authenticity and sustainability.

The teaching structure of the course is divided into: LECTURES: The professor will present the theoretical grounds of the course, with the help of audiovisual material. CASE STUDIES: Students will discuss specific cases regarding the protection of cultural heritage. PRACTICAL SESSIONS: Students will engage in activities concerning the study of cultural heritage. VISITS: Given the right circumstances, students will visit one or more cultural institutions.
