Objectives

The aim of the course is to teach how to distinguish the different instruments of international police and judicial cooperation existing in each material and territorial framework, according to their regulation, purpose and requirements, identifying the main practical problems to which they may have given rise and the level of effectiveness achieved through them.

1. STATE, EXTRATERRITORIAL AND UNIVERSAL JURISDICTION, INTERNATIONAL AND REGIONAL ORGANISATIONS: 1.1. Jurisdiction and legal cooperation 1.2. Universal Jurisdiction and International Criminal Court 1.3. International and regional organisations: their role in legal cooperation 2. LEGAL COOPERATION IN THE EUROPEAN UNION: 2.1. History, legal basis, entities 2.2. Mechanisms of judicial and police cooperation - Principles of the legal cooperation and their practical implementation: mutual assistance, mutual recognition and information availability - European criminal procedure: warranties of accused and victims 3. LEGAL COOPERATION OF LATIN AMERICA: 3.1. History, legal basis. 3.2. Mechanisms of judicial and police cooperation: - Within America - Between Latin America and Iberian Peninsula - Between Latin America and the European Union

Learning activities and methodology

ACTIVITIES AND METHODOLOGY: - Classes of theory - explanation of all concepts necessary for the subject, uploading all necessary materials and bibliography in virtual Aula Global. - Classes of practices - case study (analysis and resolution) - Mixed classes - analysis of case-law, seminars with practitioners; - Team work - debates about peculiar aspects of the subject matter; - Individual work - preparation to classes of practice, elaboration of research paper. TUTORSHIPS: Weekly time schedule is provided in virtual Aula Global. Additionally, doubts can be resolved by e-mail.

Assessment System

ORDINARY CALL
- Resolution of cases during practicas classes: up to 40 %
- Final research paper: up to 60 %

Attendance at the classroom sessions of the subject is compulsory. Unjustified absence of more than 25% of the total number of sessions (3 sessions) will result in the failure of the subject in the ordinary exam.


EXTRAORDINARY CALL
a. For the students that have followed the process of continuous evaluation, the exam will have the value of 50 % to which  the value of 50 % of the grade of the continuous evaluation will be added. 
b. If the student has not followed the process of continuous evaluation, he will have the right to take an exam with a value of 100% of the total qualification of the subject.
