Objectives
1. Understanding the meaning of the idea of tradition in literature, culture and history and its use and change during the time 2. Knowledge of the literary genres and its presence in contemporary culture 3. Knowledge of the ways in which the tradition, real or created, affects central aspects of the contemporary politics, literature and culture
Skills and learning outcomes
Description of contents: programme
The course is divided in two parts: 1. the concept of tradition in literature, the relationship between orality and writing, the traditional literary genres and the analysis of some examples showing the preservation of some traditional aspects in contemporary world (Spain and Latin America); 2. the concept of tradition in history, the political use of tradition in the XIXth, XXth and XXIth centuries, the development of traditionalism in the XIXth century as an alternative to the liberalism and the role of women in it, the unmasking of false traditions and the analysis of some contemporary examples (Spain and Latin América).
Learning activities and methodology
1. Conferences, which aim at presenting the concepts that the students must acquire. 2. Practical sessions, during which the students will work with documents related with the contents of the course and analyzing Spanish and Latin American examples. 3. Presentations of the students, which aim at improve and develop students' learning.
