¿ Political representation and the visualisation of social conflicts
¿ Public sphere, rational argumentation and staging
¿ Presence, immediacy and institutions
¿ Political violence and frames of recognition
¿ Democratic institutions that produce representations
The course is focused on the instruments that produce representations of social conflict. In the history of political thought the fundamental reference in that field is the platonic analogy between the agora and the theatre. In fact, this would be the privileged space for staging the deepest moral conflicts, but also for producing shared views on them, which should provide the glue of social order. In this approach, a historical survey of the process that made possible the consolidation of modern representative democracy is needed, but also of the main contemporary theories of justice. In the background, we will have the fading image we have of most of the deepest contemporary political conflicts: the distribution of scarce resources, the tension between identity and difference, the distribution of knowledge, or the quest for a long-lasting pace.
