Students are expected to have completed introductory courses in general, and specially "Introduction to sociology"
Objectives
Understanding of the main developments in sociological theory since its inception. Familiarity with the historical, political, and social contexts in which the most significant theoretical contributions have emerged. Ability to identify key authors and schools of thought that have shaped the theoretical foundations of sociology. As a result, the student will gain a comprehensive overview of sociology¿s theoretical heritage and will be able to identify the most significant transformations from the 17th century to the present day.
Description of contents: programme
Students are offered the possibility of having a complete picture, in context, about the pattern formed by the theoretical heritage of the discipline 1. Introduction: theories, paradigms and current 2. Contractualism and rationalism in the origins of sociology. 3. Individual, partnership, State: utopia and reality 4. Capitalism and labor movements, anarchism, Marxism, socialism. 5. Main streams of Marxism. 6. Institutionalization of sociology: France, Germany, USA and Spain. 7. The functionalist paradigm and its critics. 8. Social movements, actors and theories in the second half of the s. XX. 9. The global society: Risk and postmodernity.
Learning activities and methodology
Learning activities and methodology will be structured as follows: Theoretical lectures will focus on the major transformations in the history of sociological theory and the emergence of the most significant sociological schools. These sessions will also emphasize the relationship between sociology and other academic disciplines, fostering a comprehensive understanding of the field. Practical sessions will involve a wide variety of individual and group activities, including the reading of key sociological texts, the preparation of summaries and brief presentations, and the application of theoretical frameworks to diverse practical scenarios. The assignments are designed to develop both subject-specific knowledge and transversal competences, such as oral and written communication, teamwork, and the ability to organize and plan tasks effectively.
