Students are expected to have completed introductory course in general, and specially "Introduction to sociology"

Knowledge of the main changes occurring in the development of sociological theory since its inception. Knowledge of the historical, political and social context in which it is possible to insert the most significant theoretical contributions. Identification of authors and trends that provide the most significant theoretical contributions to the development of sociology. Consequently, the student will have a complete picture of the theoretical heritage of sociology, and will be able to identify the most significant changes occurred since the XVII Century until today.

Students are offered the possibility of having a complete picture, in context, about the pattern formed by the theoretical heritage of the discipline 1. Introduction: theories, paradigms and current 2. Contractualism and rationalism in the origins of sociology. 3. Individual, partnership, State: utopia and reality 4. Capitalism and labor movements, anarchism, Marxism, socialism. 5. Main streams of Marxism. 6. Institutionalization of sociology: France, Germany, USA and Spain. 7. The functionalist paradigm and its critics. 8. Social movements, actors and theories in the second half of the s. XX. 9. The global society: Risk and postmodernity.

Learning activities and methodology wil be developed through: Theoretical lectures directed towards the great transformations in the history of sociological theory and the genesis of the most relevant sociological schools, likewise the knowledge will be based in the relationship of sociology with other disciplines. Practical classes which include a broad range of activities, individually and in groups: reading significant sociological texts, creating summaries and brief presentations, application of the theories to different practical scenarios. Tne assignmetns are aimed to develope learning skills related to both the specific content of the course and also to improve transversal skills, including oral and written expression, teamwork skills, organization and planification of the different tasks.
