Students are expected to have completed introductory course in general, and specially "Introduction to sociology"
Knowledge of the main changes occurring in the development of sociological theory since its inception. Knowledge of the historical, political and social context in which it is possible to insert the most significant theoretical contributions. Identification of authors and trends that provide the most significant theoretical contributions to the development of sociology. As a result of this learning, the student will have a complete picture of the theoretical heritage of sociology, and be able to identify the most significant changes have occurred since the XVII Century until today.
Description of contents: programme
Students are offered the possibility of having a complete picture, in context, about the pattern formed by the theoretical heritage of the discipline. Item 1. Introduction: theories, paradigms and currents. Item 2. Contractualism and rationalism in the origins of sociology. Item 3. Individual, partnership, State: utopia and reality Item 4. Capitalism and labor movements, anarchism, Marxism, socialism. Item 5. Main streams of Marxism. Item 6. Institutionalization of sociology: France, Germany, USA and Spain. Item 7. The functionalist paradigm and its critics. Item 8. Social movements, actors and theories in the second half of the s. XX. Item 9. The global society: Risk and postmodernity.
Learning activities and methodology
Learning activities and methodology wil be developed through: Lectures (2 ECTS) for the acquisition of skills related to knowledge of the great transformations in the history of sociological theory and the genesis of his top schools, and the relationship of sociology with other disciplines. Practical classes (2 ECTS) that include a broad range of activities, individually and in groups: search for references and library work, reading, creating summaries and brief presentations, both oral and written form periodic self-evaluations, aimed at developing learning skills related to both the specific content of the subject as to improve the skills of a more transversal, including oral and written expression, teamwork skills, organize and plan rigorously carrying out its duties and maintain standards quality in carrying out their work. Individual student work (2 ECTS) that includes the study of matter, the preparation of the various tasks and practices to be undertaken during the course, work in library
