To analyze the basic concepts and theories related to the inequality between men and women, both from a sociological and feminist perspective. To analyze the social fields where the inequality between men and women is more clear, addressing especially the familiy organization. To analyze the social problems that gender inequality generates and the social policies oriented to overcome them. To be able to contribute to the design and implementation of social policies oriented to gender equality. In general terms, the course has the aim of learning to recognize the complexity of social phenomena as well as to summarize them critically.

THEME 1 Women, men and family in society theory 1. Durkheim: division of work and women's `social simplicity' 2. John Stuart Mill: the equalitarian approach 3. Marxist theory. 4. Other perspectivs: Simmel, Parsons y la microsociology THEME 2 Feminist theory 1. What is feminism? 2. Simone de Beauvoir: `the other' in the explanation of oppression. 3. Liberal feminism. 4. Radical feminism. 5. Socialist feminism. 6. Difference feminism. THEME 3 Contemporary families: process of change 1. The Southern European model. 2. Sexual division of labour inside the family and men's incorporation to the domestic sphere. 3. New characteristics: divorces, delays and heterogenity of families. 4. Care in society. THEME 4 Gender violence 1. Main concepts and characteristics of the violence against women. 2. Different types of violence. 3. Figures and perceptions. 4. Policies against gender violence. TEMA 5 The State in relation to gender and family issues. 1. Welfare state models and the relation to the family 2. Family policies in Europe and Spain. 3. Women's labour market. 4. Reconciliation of labour and family life. 5. Gender equality policies. 6. Care policies THEME 7 The situation of women and family in other parts of the world 1. Present situation and action for the future. 2. International cooperation and millenium development goals
Learning activities and methodology
There are practical and theoretical lessons. Theoretical lessons are based on specific bibliography chosen for each concrete subject, the explanation of the class and the slides in Aula Global. Practical lessons consist on different kinds of exercises based on the contents of the theoretical classes. They are different kinds: - Individual or in group - To be done in the class, at home or in both places. - Written, oral or mix. - To be graded for doing it or to be given specific grades.
