Objectives
OBJECTIVES: The course aims to provide students with an approach to the notion of human dignity theoretical and practical . It will try to understand this value not only through a moral and legal perspective but also through history. Reflect on human dignity can be understood not only as the foundation of rights humans, but also as a value that suggests our own human condition. Much of this objectives will be achieved through the study of real situations. COMPETENCES: .- Awareness of the importance of the value of human dignity. .- Knowledge of the different dimensions of dignity. .- Importance of history when analyzing this concept. .- Linking human rights with dignity. .- Ability to define this notion from a legal and philosophical view.
Description of contents: programme
1. Human dignity and law. 2. Human dignity as a historical concept. The decisive importance of modernity. 3. Approach to the concept of human dignity. Human dignity in conflict. 3.1.- Human dignity and fundamental rights. 3.2.- Dignity, capacity and autonomy. 3.3.- Dignity and values freedom and equality. Dignity, rights and difference. 3.4.- Dignity and solidarity value. 3.5.- Dignity and vulnerable social groups.
Learning activities and methodology
The contents are organized through theory lessons (where the teacher will present the basic concepts of the course) and practical lessons (in which students must apply the knowledge previously acquired in other practical cases). Attending sessions is important to develop the subjects. As well, during practical sessions discussions may be proposed: active participation in these debates will be a evaluation criterion. Attendance to lectures, tutorials and other activities requires previous out-of-class reading of the learning materials.
