The programme is divided into seven sections, which correspond to a chronological periodisation but also to a thematic criterion; in other words, synchronic and diachronic perspectives are combined on the understanding that certain topics linked to modernity are presented as a constant over time. The programme is based on the reading of certain creative works in Europe, with special attention to Spanish literature based on the most representative genres of each period. We will also look at literature written by women and/or featuring female characters in order to approach their literary construction. This implies the essential reading of a series of works with the consequent work inside and outside the classroom. Students should bring copies of the readings to class.
Thematic lines:
1. Humanism and the new modern sensibility
2. The birth of the modern novel and theatre: the baroque crisis.
3. The encounter with the other: autonomy, humanity and universality.
4. Romantic Spirit and Subjectivity: Rebellion and Passion
5. Portraying Reality: Towards Naturalism
6. Literature on the warpath
7. Literature as commitment and experimentation
