It should be better if the student has knowledge on Philosophy, Arts, Literature and Music. But in our course we will study those topics.

WHAT MUST THE STUDENT LEARN? An introduction to Aesthetics through Modernity, reading some of the most important writings that founded this topic. The student should also understand the theory by looking for the creation, the harmony and mix between arts and thoughts in order to develop and answer some of the principal current theoretical problems.

We will try to understand the origin of our aesthetic problems from the early beginnings, observing the history of philosophy and the history of arts, combined with social and political and religious developments. In this way, we will see the solutions that others have given to current problems and the novelty of our XXI century Western conception, in particular, the problem of what exactly art means; what to do with concepts as beauty or sublimity, etc.; the artist and his audience; and public art. We will focus particularly on questions about Fine Arts and the theories of Dickie and Danto in the USA, so a fashionable today. I. Romanticism and its heritage. VIII. Dissolution of Romanticism and Avant-gardes. IX. Repetition of Avant-gardes and Post-Modernity. X. State Criteria on Fine Arts, Institutional Theory, USA¿s Philosophy on Fine Arts: Dickie and Danto.

ACTIVITIES, METHODOLOGY AND TUTORIALS Aesthetics is a part of Philosophy, but combined with creativity and sensibility, with Fine Arts, Music, Literature, Photography, Films, etc. So, there are both theoretical and practical themes throughout the course. Lessons are discussions about the issues concerning the content and readings. There will be visits to museums in Madrid: the Reina Sofía, the Real Academia de San Fernando, the Prado and others, as well as visits to exhibitions, concerts and other activities. We will also be discussing videos and web artworks. Readings and debates will form the basis of a dialogue in the classical approach of expositio et disputatio in order to achieve a greater understanding of the issues. Tutorials will be every day after class and on Tuesdays, from 12.15 to 14¿00 am.
