Ability to identify the links between journalism and social change since the emergence of the mass media and in particular of the news media in Spain. Understanding of the influence of periodical information in the historical development, either in the sense of change, or in the maintenance of the established order (resistance to change).
The course explores the evolution of the press in Spain from the 16th century to the present day. It analyses the first steps of the press, its role in the construction of the liberal state and the challenges faced during this process. It deals with the crisis of national identity, regenerationism and the Golden Age of journalism, as well as the collapse of the liberal state and the impact of Franco's regime on the press and intellectual exile. Finally, it examines the influence of the media on the Transition and the development of constitutional democracy.
