The course examines the history of the Internet and the World Wide Web, addressing concepts such as technological determinism, social constructivism and actor-network theory. The structure and dynamics of networks, including small-world and power-law networks, as well as the evolution towards a network society, are analyzed. Online communicative models, participatory culture, networked individualism, and phenomena such as filter bubbles and echo chambers are explored. Topics such as big data, the digital economy, privacy, surveillance, the spread of fake news, and the impact of algorithms and generative artificial intelligence on today's information environment are also discussed.
