Objectives
1. Know the major milestones of Latin American literature, inserting them in their historical and cultural context according to the various literary currents. 2. Analyze a literary text according to the main characteristics and specificities of Latin American literature. 3. Introduce students to the techniques of analysis and documentary research into any matter concerning this literature.
Description of contents: programme
Unit 1.- Being a woman in Latin America: notes for the study of the artistic production of women from the process of Independence up to today. The Spanish American women and her double colonization. Woman, body, private space and public space in the national project. Feminism in Spanish American territory: from rebellion to revelation. The female exile: exile between exiles. Unit 2.- The pioneers of feminism in America: the fantastic universe of María Luisa Bombal and the descentered voices of Salvadora Medina Onrubia. Unit 3.- Victoria Ocampo: the intellectual proposal of Sur magazine. Silvina Ocampo and avant-garde: silenced voices and the concept of subaltern, the defense of female subjectivity and the destabilization of stereotypes. Unit 5.- Chroniclers of Latin America: the political, social and gender perspective of Elena Poniatowska, marginalized from the boom, in La noche de Tlatelolco: Testimonios de historia oral. The profiles of female Latin American artists and creators by Leila Guerriero: an exploration towards Idea Vilariño´s poetry. Unit 6.- Motherhood: from social imposition to the debate on abortion and the personal and private choice of women. La hija única, by Guadalupe Nettel, and Lina Meruane´s tirade in Contra los hijos.
Learning activities and methodology
Literature and supplementary material are the main instruments to be used during classes. The tutorial system (place and schedule) will be provided at the beginning of the course.
