Objectives
1. A broad knowledge of the history and contemporary issues of Asian / Latin American cinema. 2. Competence to identify the diferent historical periods, movements, styles and main authors of Asian / Latin American cinema. 3. Competence to contextualize, analyze and discuss contemporary Asian / Latin American cinema, with particular attention to their growing transnational dimensions.

The course's focal point alternates between Asian cinemas (odd-even academic years, starting with 2011-2012) and Latin American cinemas (even-odd academic years, starting with 2012-2013) so as to optimize the acquisition of skills and knowledge by students, in the context of an optional subject of short duration. The format of the courses will be monographic, within the general framework of contents set forth below: 1. Theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of Asian / Latin American cinemas 2. Introduction to the history of Asian / Latin American cinemas: national industries, themes, styles, movements, authors. 3. Key concepts in the study of contemporary Asian / Latin American cinemas: national industries, themes, styles, movements, authors. 4. Transnational perspectives.
Learning activities and methodology
1. Master classes. Theory-based classes. Students will acquire basic knowledge about the topics addressed in the class. Competences 1, 2 and 3 (1 ECTS). 2. Practical sessions. Fragments of especially relevant or representative films will be screened. Case studies. Competences 2 and 3 (0,5 ECTS). 3 Student's work. Guided study to theoretical-practical contents and learning materials. Students will be required to write an essay about specific aspects related to the class syllabus. Competences 2 and 3 (1,5 ECTS).
