Introduction to Communication and Media Studies, Reading Moving Image (Film and Television), Media Psychology.
Objectives
1) Ability to analyse the construction of storytelling. 2) Knowledge of narrative devices and strategies. 3) Familiarisation with the main theories of film narrative and its history. 4) Ability to approach the history of the study of narrative and theory. 5) Ability to appreciate the main narrative devices and their importance.

0) Introduction to Film Narratives 1) Voice and Narrator. 2) Character and characterisation. 3) The uses of time. 4) Structure and form. Structure vs. form. Formalism. 5) Introduction to Semiotics and Greimas actantial model. 6) The narrative device. Metaphors and running imagery. 7) Introduction to Adaptation Studies. 8) Narrative and Performance.
Learning activities and methodology
All sessions are divided in one LECTURE, based on a theoretical presentation, plus one SEMINAR, in which students work on their practical exercises. Students are expected to attend all sessions and participate in the debates. Deadlines for written work must be strictly met. All students are required to do a presentation; the topics for this will be distributed after week 3. Other in-class excercises include: - Working with metaphors. - Working with estrangement techniques. - The 3-act structure excercise. - Presentation.
