Objectives
1. Achieve a global and direct vision of the organization of an information center. 2. Obtain the required capacity to execute a professional career in libraries, archives or documentation center services. 3. Identify and familiarize with the work routines in the processes of retrieve, location, treatment and diffusion of information. 4. Know how to work in team, integrating in a group or professional community of the area. 5. Serve directly and indirectly the users in their information needs.
Description of contents: programme
The Practicum represents for the students the initiation in the profession of the information and documentation specialist, in public or private institutions, devoted, whole or partially, to the selection, treatment and diffusion of information in any type of contents or formats. With these professional activities, the students can obtain a complete training and put in practice the theoretical and practical knowledge learned during in his studies, always, under the supervision and guide of an informational expert.
Learning activities and methodology
Professional practices in the field of the treatment, management and the diffusion of the information in an information center or specific unit. The concrete content of the practices will be determined by the type of information center or unit in which the students finally develop this activity. In any case, among the several professional activities perform in the majority of the information centers and units, the students can accomplish the following: - Catalog, classify, index and summarize properly monographs and serial publications. - Catalog special materials (videos, disks, maps, computer archives, etc.) - Organize and order a documental collection, in traditional supports and new digital formats. - Serve properly the users of the center. - Elaborate bibliographic researches in traditional repertoires, databases in CD-ROM or others information sources available in Internet. - Digitalize documents. - Prepared users and bibliometric studies. Participate in the application of management and organization techniques in the information centers, for example, the development of plans, projects, evaluations of the quality of the services, etc., - Apply the informatics technology in the cataloging and management. - Support in the edition and maintenance of the center website or the intranet.
Assessment System
The assessment consists of three fundamental aspects: the assistance control (10%), the tutor evaluation (50%), and the student report (40%). The assistance is confirmed by a daily control of signatures. The evaluation is prepared by the tutor through a survey designed and sent by the university. The survey will value and classify some aspects like the tasks realized by the student, his personal disposal, the relations established with the users, companions and other professionals of the center. Any another aspect of interest may be added. The report allows valuing the performance of each student and his capacity to analyze and identify the peculiarities and services of the center.
