Previous courses from the Sociology degree or the double degree in Political Science and Sociology related to sociological theory, especially contemporary sociological theory.
Objectives
Ability to analyze the various aspects where information technology and communication have had a significant impact, both in the macro and micro level, considering the connection between technology and society.
Learning Outcomes
K1: To know the principles and values of democracy and sustainable development, in particular, respect for human rights and fundamental rights, gender equality and non-discrimination, the principles of universal accessibility and climate change. K2: To know of basic humanistic contents, oral and written expression, following ethical principles and completing a multidisciplinary training profile. K5: To know the basic components of cultural differences and social inequalities. K7: To understand the relationships between population, resources, environment and socio-demographic structure K9: Understand and synthesize the plurality of approaches and concepts of the subdisciplines linked to sociology. S1: To know of basic humanistic contents, oral and written expression, following ethical principles and completing a multidisciplinary training profile. Description of contents: programme
Topic 1. Technology in the information society: technology as an element of social change and social construction. The problems of technological diffusion. Topic 2. Technologies in the information society. Digitization and virtuality. Topic. 3. Humans and machines. Topic 4. Tecnology, information and the natural environment: The problematic relationship between society and the environment Topic 5. Technological revolution and postindustrial society: informationalism, globalization and network society. The impact of the information technologies in the organization of the economy and politics. Topic 6. Network society: The 21st century society, new challenges and problems connected to technological development. Topic 7. The media in the information society: new forms of communication and their social impact. Topic 8. Education in the information society. Information, technology and knowledge.
Learning activities and methodology
The module is divided into two main components: theoretical lectures and assignments. The theoretical sessions will be delivered by the lecturer and will incorporate participatory teaching methods. Students will receive presentation materials for each topic covered in class. Their understanding of the theoretical content will be assessed through a final exam. Assignments will be submitted at the end of each topic and will be based on the corresponding thematic content. These tasks will be supported by complementary materials such as academic readings, newspaper articles, documentaries, and films.
