Objectives
Ability to solve problems, through both analysis and synthesis. Development of team work skills and of the skills for both oral and written expression. Improvement of critical reasoning skills and development of a commitment to upholding ethical standards. Development of the motivation to accomplish high quality work. This course provides students with tools to learn about the demographic aspects connected to migration in the contemporary world, the sociological aspects connected to the social integration of immigrants and the autochtonous population's attitude to them, the political aspects connected to immigration, integration, and naturalization policies, and the economic aspects related to the impact that migration flows have on origin and destination societies.
Description of contents: programme
This course examines migration in the contemporary world. It distinguishes between traditional migration (individuals and families of low socio-economic status and from less developed countries) and the new mobilities (individuals of high socio-professional status). Later, it examines the topic of migration from the various angles that dominate the social-scientific literature on the topic--demographic, social, political, and economic--with emphasis on the main scientific and political debates. Learning activities and methodology
Developed through: Lectures: (2 credits ECTS) toward the development of the necessary skills necessary toward the learning of the subject matter (migration flows, sociological, political, and economic aspects). Practice: (2 credits ECTS) Includes the completion of tasks and individual and group homework: library search, work at the library, reading, structuring written work and conducting class presentations, and repeated self-evaluation during the quarter; all these assignments aim at the development of specific competencies related with the module in which the course is included; among them, the ability to identify problems and sociological approaches, as well as the ability and skills to use concepts and analytical tools about the topic of migration. Among general skills, these sessions relate to the ability to conduct group work, to communicate in writing and orally, critical reasoning, motivation toward the completion of tasks and an ethical commitment. Individual work (2 credits ECTS), including studying the course contents, the completion of various tasks and assignements, library work, attendance to tutorials, and the preparation and completion of exams.
