World Politics
Objectives
This course serves as a continuation and supplement to the World Politics course. Its main focus and objectives consist of an in-depth empirical analysis of key issues in contemporary world politics. The general theme of the course¿the challenges of international cooperation in response to various growing global issues in the 21st century¿is addressed through a detailed analysis of a series of specific topics.
Learning Outcomes
K1: Acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and techniques of the discipline of political science, using the appropriate terminology and the appropriate scientific method K5: To know the structure and functioning of political institutions and their interaction with the rest of the components of the political system from a comparative perspective K8: Recognize the historical dimension of political and social processes and explain them in terms of it C2: Identify, understand and know how to use the main theoretical and conceptual approaches and frameworks of the different areas of specialization and subdisciplines of political science C4: Be able to dedicate themselves to lifelong autonomous learning, which allows them to adapt to new situations in the professional environment S5: Apply the basic techniques and instruments of consulting for the various political actors as well as political communication S6: Apply the fundamental theoretical references of politics and international organizations, as well as the relationship of international politics with domestic political processes S8: Ability to gather and interpret data and knowledge relevant to the development and defense of arguments on topics in their area of study
Description of contents: programme
This subject serves as a continuation and supplement to the World Politics subject. The main focus and objectives of the course consist of an in-depth empirical analysis of the key issues of contemporary world politics. The general theme of the subject ¿ the problems of international cooperation with regard to various growing global challenges in the twenty-first century ¿ is dealt with through a detailed analysis of a number of specific themes. 1. Introduction: key differences between the world systems of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. 2. A new Cold War? China-US relations in the twenty-first century. 3. Fundamental objectives of the foreign policy of post-Soviet Russia in the twenty-first century. 4. The European Union and the problems of a common European foreign and defence policy. 5. Obstacles to peace and security in the Middle East. 6. Combating the emergence of global organized crime in the 21st century. 7. The problems of international cooperation with respect to global climate change. 8. The problems of international cooperation with respect to global terrorism. 9. China's Rivals: India and Southeast Asian Geopolitics in the 21st Century. 10. Conclusions: the end of the Western era? Current debates and perspectives on foreign policy in the East and West.
