A) The student will develop an analytical and critical way of thinking towards sociology, in order to get used to formulate debates in relation to the different social context and from a scientific perspective B) The student will develop research abilities through the essays that have to be done during the course, using primary and secondary sources and different tools available at University. C) The student will be encouraged to develop oral expression and abilities for debates, focusing on information from an empirical analysis of the social reality. D) The student will learn to identify the relations between social institutions and social systems. E) The student will learn to observe everyday social processes through different ways, like movies, readings or observation, in order to understand the hidden characteristics of the phenomena. F) The student will learn to work with different methodologies, carrying out individual and group activities, as well as essays done in the class or at home, that will have to be presented both in a written and oral way.
Description of contents: programme
This course aims to give information about Spanish contemporary social reality from a sociological perspective. Therefore, different concepts and ideas about Spanish society and social changes will be given, based on theoretical and empirical research and main contemporary debates. Information related to Spain will be analyzed in a broader European framework. Topic 1: Social tendencies in Spanish society Topic 2: Families in transition Topic 3: Migratory processes in Spain Topic 4: Welfare state Topic 5: Forms of everyday life Topic 6: 'Empty Spain': depopulation and rurality
Learning activities and methodology
Theoretical lessons (3 credits ECTS): master classes where the contents of the course will be explained using different tools that facilitate explanations (power point slides, videos), having time for questions and participation from the student side. Practical lessons (3 credits ECTS): exercises related to theoretical explanations using films, computer programs and readings among other materials.
