Objectives
With regard to the learning outcomes, upon completion of the course, students should be able to: - Master the various theories on the purposes of punishment. - Have acquired a solid knowledge of the most complex issues of the sentencing system. - Master the most complex theoretical and practical problems arising from custodial sentences, including imprisonment and other forms of deprivation of liberty provided for in the Spanish Criminal Code. - Have gained an initial understanding of disqualification penalties and fines. - Have acquired a solid grounding in the regulation of penal security measures. - Possess in-depth knowledge of the specific problems posed by long-term sentences and post-release security measures. - Understand and master the fundamentals of the prison system. - Understand and master complex issues concerning the legal relationship between prisoners and the prison administration, as well as prisoners¿ rights. - Have been introduced to the most current debates in prison policy and penology.

Collection of biological samples for DNA profiling This course is fully aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, in particular Goal 4 on Gender Equality and Goal 16 on Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.
Learning activities and methodology
The training and study activities will be structured as follows: - Theoretical content will be explained and discussed during the online sessions with the course instructors. - Further debate on some of the topics from the syllabus will take place in the course forum. - The analysis and discussion of practical cases related to general institutions of Criminal Law will be encouraged. - Students will be encouraged to carry out individual readings and assignments, with the support of faculty experts in the subject. Tutorials will be held online on the date and time set by the course instructors. They will focus on resolving questions about the course content and on exploring in greater depth those aspects requested by the students.
