Safety at Work (General Part)

Objectives

Ability to apply legislation on the storing of products, fire safety, confined spaces, working at heights and special tasks. Ability to identify hazards with machines, work equipment, lifting, transport and maintenance in addition to how to adapt to safety legislation. Ability to identify hazards and apply preventive measures against electrical risk, fires and explosions. Knowledge for the elaboration and implementation of emergency and evacuation plans. Ability to identify hazards and preventive measures for work undertaken in the construction, maritime, agriculture, livestock and mining sectors. Ability to define hazards and preventive measures in the transportation of hazardous goods. Ability to apply the knowledge acquired to real situations via practical cases and workshops to be undertaken in the classroom or in the specific work environment where the risk can be generated.

Description of contents: programme

1. Risks related to chemical agents. Safety conditions. 2. Work equipment: risk assessment and prevention. 3. Lifting, transportation and maintenance equipment. 4. Electrical risk. Working with high and low voltage. 5. Fire protection systems. 6. Explosive atmospheres. 7. Emergency and evacuation plans. 8. Confined spaces. Applicable legislation, case studies. 9. Coordination of health and safety at construction sites. Working at heights. Applicable legislation. 10. Health and safety plans at construction sites. Applicable legislation. 11. Pressure equipment. Applicable legislation, case studies. 12. Elaboration of work procedures. Case studies. 13. Hazards and preventive measures in specific sectors: maritime sector. 14. Hazards and preventive measures in specific sectors: agriculture/forestry sector. 15. Hazards and preventive measures in specific sectors: livestock sector.

Learning activities and methodology

Lectures in which the fundamental conceptual contents the student must acquire will be developed. In addition to consulting the necessary manuals and a specific bibliography for certain matters which will be provided at the beginning of the four-month period, the student will be provided, in advance, with materials made by the professor to enable a more in-depth study of topics and the better following of explanations. These work materials will serve to introduce the debate and discussion of topics of greater interest to the both the professor and students. Practical workshops in work groups, individual case studies, analysis of videos and other documents of interest, class debates. Weekly tutoring hours.

Calendar of Continuous assessment

The evaluation of continuous academic performance will be worth 40% of the final mark. This will be done in the following manner:

Students will prepare practical cases and similar activities. The ability of the student to manage the documentation, their ability to resolve and apply quick, correct and efficient responses to the generally unforeseen circumstances that are presented, and their ability in searching for solutions in unregulated situations will be assessed.

The final exam will be a test on specific questions (50-60 questions), and this will be worth 50% of the final mark. Any student who has not performed sufficiently well in practicals to have passed them during the course must undertake a practical exam which will be assessed along with the grade from the final exam. This will help to check the student has acquired the established competences.

Percentage weighting of all other forms of assessment: 50

In case of the extraordinary exam, the student must complete a theory exam and a practical exam. The completion of the practical exam will not be necessary if the student has passed the continuous assessment. For the extraordinary call, the final exam will weigh 100 percent of the final grade.
