It is necessary to have a good knowledge of Spanish in order to be able to follow and pass this subject.
Objectives
1. Acquire a critical knowledge of the Greco-Latin heritage in Europe, acquiring the necessary competences to analyze the works and central ideas of the classic legacy and its influence in the current culture. 2. Recognize the ways in which classical ideas and values ¿¿determine central aspects of the contemporary world. 3. To know the process of transmission of the classic legacy, modifications and manipulations throughout History.
Skills and learning outcomes
Description of contents: programme
1. Greco-Roman civilization in the genesis of Europe. 2. Orient and classic legacy in Spain. 3. Classical Archeology: genesis and cultural influence. The Spanish and Latin American case. 4. The classical aesthetics and its reception: Winckelmann and Theory of the Arts. Recoveries of the classical ideal in Spain and Latin America 5. The survival of the pagan religions in the Christian religion. The Transmission of myths. 6. The classical legacy in historiography. The Hispanic World. 7. Antiquity in Western politics. Use and abuse of classic models in Spain and Latin America. SECOND PART: 1. Material sources of classical philology: Spanish libraries and collections of Greek and Latin manuscript texts. 2. Classical mythology surviving in Hispanic literary culture: the case of Hercules. 3. Ancient epic poetry and its Hispanic reception: the case of the Ilias Latina. 4. Greek political philosophy (1): Plato and his legacy in Hispanic culture. 5. Greek political philosophy (2): Aristotle and his legacy in Hispanic culture. 6. The Spanish humanists and the rediscovery of the classical texts. 7. Greek tragedy and its reception: the character of Antigone between Sophocles and María Zambrano.
Learning activities and methodology
1. Lectures, which will present the knowledge that students should acquire. Students will be given basic reference texts that allow them to understand and deepen the contents of the subject taught. 2. Practical classes, in which we will work with specific documentation that allows students a more precise approach to the contents of the subject. 3. Oral presentations, presenting the results and materials worked, with the aim of promoting learning and the acquisition of skills in the field of presentation and public dissemination of the work done. 4. Use of forums and another learning tools (Wooclap y Kaltura). 5. Teaching is full taught in the synchronous and interactive online modality through Blackboard collaborate. 5. Tutoring online through Blackboard collaborate or Google Meet.
