This course is an introduction to theories, systems and automated cataloging practices presented in a broad historical and contemporary context. The basic objective is to understand the function and creation of library catalogs and acquire the ability to use and interpret cataloging tools effectively. The contents are:
Theme 1. Concept of the catalog as a tool for information retrieval. The document and document process automation. Concept of cataloging and the cataloging module of the integrated library management systems. Operations of the Descriptive Cataloguing. Cataloguing products: bibliographic record and catalog.
Theme 2. The standardization of descriptive cataloging basis for cooperation: union catalogs. National and international standards for bibliographic description: ISBD, FRBR, RC, AACR2, RDA, MARC format.
Theme 3. The creation of the bibliographic record ISBD standard. General operation of bibliographic description. Organization description: areas, elements and punctuation. Sources of information. Documents in more than a physical drive. Language and writing, abbreviations, capitalization, accents, typos. Levels of detail in the description.
Theme 4. The bibliographic record in MARC format: the format of the computer data entry and exchange.
- Elements of a MARC record: structure (ISO 2709-1996), identifiers of content, information content.
- The components of a bibliographic record MARC: header, directory, fields (tags, character and purpose to the registration area.) Control Fields (00X). Data fields, indicators and subfield codes.
