The course is aimed at law graduates and future practising lawyers who have an upper-intermediate level of English to help them to communicate with their future English-speaking clients, to read and understand legal texts in English, and to draft basic documents in English. Although there will inevitably be a translation component, this is not a course for English-Spanish legal translators, but for lawyers who wish to use legal English actively. Classes will be taught in English and Spanish, with a practical focus on both oral and written communication, centered on legal terminology. The course is divided into two sections, the first focuses on commercial law, and the second on other areas of law, with the aim of providing specific legal tools and terminology.
In doing so, students should:
--learn some basic concepts of the common law legal system;
--master the basic English legal vocabulary of various fields of law;
--to know the peculiarities of common law legal language, including the differences between British and American English in legal matters, with special emphasis on so-called false friends which, despite their apparent similarity, can have opposite meanings in English and Spanish;
--be able to use these skills to explain (verbally and in writing) basic aspects of Spanish Law in English in the areas of Law covered in the subject;
LEARNING OUTCOMES The student will acquire advanced specialised knowledge in the subjects indicated in the description of contents. They will also learn to solve problems that arise in these areas, prepare legal memos and documents related to legal advice for companies.
