Objectives
1. Scriptwriting as discourse. 2. Scriptwriting as literature. 3. Structure and scriptwriting. 4. Dramatic structure. 5. Approach to creative procedures and techniques.
Description of contents: programme
-Introduction to Screenplay for Cinema. The writer within the industry. A global approach. -From the Idea to the treatment. The process of creating a story. Types of Conflicts. Looking for the protagonist. -The tools of screenwriting. Objectives and premises. Dramatic tension. What is this about. Analyzing short stories. -The Structure. Plot point, subplot. The classic narrative versus the character driven . Syd Field and his paradigm. Italian neorealism. The nouvelle vague. -Creating characters. Drama and Psychology. From Ibsen to James Joyce. From literatura to Cinema. The three fronts. Tools for creating characters. -Rewriting, the process of improving the script. Finding what is wrong. The art of fixing problems. From the scene to the structure. Conclusions.
Learning activities and methodology
Our classes include both theory and practice. The in-class assingments include: working with dialogues, narrative voice, secuence vs. scene. Students are expected to participate in our class and submit their homework respecting deadlines. There will be a strong emphasis on the importance of reading time. This reading should include material from our bibliography, original scripts and treatments... and other material that will be uploaded in Aula Global.
