Objectives
1. Studying the relevant concepts needed to understand politics. 2. Appreciation of the need to understand an evaluate politics from an intellectual, critical and rigorous view. 3. Analysing political problems and situations from an interdisciplinary approach. 4. Facilitating analysis and debate and ethical valoration of current political problems and possible solutions. 5. Studyng the works of the more relevant political thinkers in History.
Learning Outcomes
K1: Acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and techniques of the discipline of political science, using the appropriate terminology and the appropriate scientific method K6: To know the main currents of political philosophy, the main contemporary political theories and ideologies and those linked to current political movements C2: Identify, understand and know how to use the main theoretical and conceptual approaches and frameworks of the different areas of specialization and subdisciplines of political science S1: Be able to debate and formulate critical reasoning, using precise terminology and specialized resources, on political phenomena S4: Be able to apply the scientific method to social, political, and economic questions both domestically and in a globalized society
Description of contents: programme
1. Concept of Politics. Philosophy of politics and its origins 2. Ethics and Politics 3. Law and Political Power. The reason of State. Rule of Law and its evolution. Welfare state in crisis and the role of civil society. 4. Freedom, equality and human rights: contemporary theories of justice. 5. Political obligation and obedience to Law. Civil disobedience 6. Models of democracy. Cosmopolitanism and cultural diversity.
Learning activities and methodology
1. Theory sessions: These sessions comprise the Professor´s explanatory lectures. 2. Practice sessions: In each session, one or two students will analyze a text, adopting for the presentation the format: a) Context; b) Summary; c) Analysis and commentary. All students will then collectively discuss the text and the questions raised in the discussion guide. 3. Tutorships
