Description of contents: programme
The aim of this subject is to provide relevant information about the uses of the concept of modernity and modernization, and about the tensions between them. In second place, about the narratives on in the modernization processes, and about concepts as progress, revolution, reaction, acceleration, caducity, retard or repetition. While, the student will learn from an interdisciplinary perspective to some contemporary debates of these topics, and it will be introduced the milestones of the history of the self-reflection of the modernity. The student will acquire acquaintance with the conceptual apparatus of the contemporary philosophy, the critical schools of social and political sciences, literary theory and the poetics of history concerning the topics of the subject. In addition to readings of these matters, the student will be confronted with current issues applying the main categories of the subject. 1. Cultural, philosophical, political and sociological theories of modernity 2. Cultural modernity and civilizing modernization: the anthropological contradictions of capitalism 3. Early, classical and late modernity. A periodization of the processes of modernization. 4. Modernization, progress, and conflict: past and present of the revolution and reaction. 5. Aceleration, obsolescence and déjà vu: the plot of modernization 6. The end of the world and the end of capitalism: A modernization without future?
