Objectives
Give centrality to the concept of culture and the role it plays in contemporary societies. Introduce the different areas of study of the Sociology of Culture and offer a synthesis of the different approaches of the main authors and schools. Analyze the study of culture at the level of the individual and, progressively, of collective macro-sociological dimensions (organizations, nations, institutional production, mass reception, etc.).

Throughout the last decades, culture has been reconceptualized in Social Sciences and its study has been boosted in different disciplines. Lectures will cover the following topics: 1. Culture: definitions and uses. 2. Study of culture in Classical Sociology (Durkheim/Weber/Marx/Simmel) 3. Schools of the Sociology of Culture and interdisciplinarity. 4. Culture and identity (cognitivism/structuralism) 5. Class, power and culture (hegemony/ideology/discourse) 6. Gender and ethnicity. 7. Cultural production (organizations/institutions) 8. Cultural reception. 9. Culture and mass media. 10. Culture of citizenship (local/national/global)
Learning activities and methodology
AF1. THEORETICAL-PRACTICAL CLASSES. They will present the knowledge that students must acquire. They will receive the class notes and will have basic reference texts to facilitate the monitoring of the classes and the development of subsequent work. Exercises, practical problems will be solved by the student and workshops and evaluation tests will be carried out to acquire the necessary skills. For subjects of 6 ECTS, 48 hours will be dedicated as a general rule with 100% attendance. AF2. TUTORIALS. Individualized assistance (individual tutorials) or in groups (collective tutorials) to students by the teacher. For subjects of 6 credits, 4 hours will be dedicated with 100% attendance. AF3. INDIVIDUAL OR GROUP WORK BY THE STUDENT. For subjects of 6 credits, 98 hours will be dedicated 0% face-to-face. MD1. THEORY CLASS. Presentations in class by the teacher with the support of computer and audiovisual media, in which the main concepts of the subject are developed and the materials and bibliography are provided to complement the learning of the students. MD2. PRACTICES. Resolution of practical cases, problems, etc. raised by the teacher individually or in groups. MD3. TUTORIALS. Individualized assistance (individual tutorials) or in groups (collective tutorials) to students by the teacher. For subjects of 6 credits, 4 hours will be dedicated with 100% attendance.
