Objectives
1) Knowledge of key ideas and concepts about terrorism. 2) Knowledge of evolution of treatment of victims over the years and and the role of victims as agents of social reconstruction and delegitimization of violence. 3) Knowledge of key ideas and concepts about the psychological consequences of terrorism on victims, the determinants of these consequences and their care. 4) Knowledge of fundamental ethical values for a society that suffers from terrorism and has a responsibility towards the victims.
Description of contents: programme
1. General considerations on terrorism. - What is terrorism? - Objectives of terrorism. - Types of terrorism. - Evolution of terrorism over the years. - Jihadist terrorism. - Consequences of terrorism in States and respect for human rights. 2. Terrorism in Spain. - Brief notes on the history of Spain: Francoist dictatorship, the birth of different terrorist groups, the democratic transition and terrorism during democracy. - ETA terrorism and the fight against terrorism in Spain. - Society's reaction to terrorism and violence. 3. Victims of terrorism. - Evolution of the concept of victim and the treatment of victims. - Spanish legislation on victims and its pioneering role in the world. - Recognition of victims of terrorism: the role of victims' associations. 4. Psychological consequences of terrorist attacks on the victims. - The psychological and psychopathological consequences of a terrorist attack. - Factors that influence the psychological impact of terrorist attacks. - Prevention of psychopathological consequences of terrorist attacks. 5. Secondary victimization, violence of terrorist persecution and their psychological consequences. - Secondary victimization in the case of terrorism and its psychological consequences. - Prevention of secondary victimization. - Violence of terrorist persecution and its psychological consequences: the case of Spain. 6. Comprehensive care for victims of terrorism. - Legal and social attention to victims of terrorism. - Psychological care for victims of terrorism.
Learning activities and methodology
The classes will have a theoretical part and another part of debate and contrast of ideas, as well as analysis of real cases. Videos and cinematographic resources will also be used. The classes will be completed with individual (personalized) and collective tutorials.
