Objectives
a. Development of learning mechanisms to understand and assimilate the basic knowledge of Spanish film history and language. b. Development of skills to properly apply the information gathered for analysis and interpretation of any film.
Description of contents: programme
1 - History of cinema: scientific basis and previous devices. Elements of cinematographic language. How to analyze a film. 2 - Origins of Spanish cinema. The pioneers. Singularities. The context of Spain at the turn of the XIX and XX centuries. 3 - The Spanish film industry until the advent of the talkies. Influence of American cinema. 4 - The avant-garde cinema: the surrealism. Luis Buñuel. 5 - The first sound films. Cinema in the 30s. Historic context. The cinema in the II Republic and Civil War. 6 - The film at the beginning of the Franco's Regime: propaganda and censorship. 7 - Cinema in the 50s: Main genres. Historic context. 8 - Renewal: Salamanca talks (1955) and the Spanish neorealism. Characteristics of its cinematic language. 9 - The 60s: The new Spanish cinema and the school of Barcelona. International productions: Bronston and spaghetti westerns. 10 - Cinema at the end of the Franco's Regime. Musical comedy and "landismo". Historic context. Metaphorical film. 11 - Trends in Spanish cinema during the Transition Period (1975-1982) . 12 - Cinema in democracy and postmodernism. Miró Law and its consequences. Pedro Almodóvar. 13 - International consolidation of Spanish cinema: Alejandro Amenábar. 14 - Auteur cinema: Gracia Querejeta, Álex de la Iglesia and other directors of their generation. The current Spanish cinema and its challenges. 15 - Cartoon movies, series and documentaries. Festivals.
Learning activities and methodology
The course is divided in a theoretical and a practical part.  The theoretical part refers to the cinematographic language and the historic evolution of the cinema, emphasizing the history of Spanish film in its historical context. The practical part includes the viewing of film clips (or short films), analysis and debate. The students must write a weekly essay on any topic related to a studied period or analyzed film.
